Koautor je dva univerzitetska udžbenika, više od 110 naučnih radova u časopisima i zbornicima konferencija, od čega 14 radova u međunarodnim naučnim časopisima sa SCI liste. Takođe, učestvovao je u realizaciji 4 međunarodna i 11 nacionalnih inovacionih, istraživačkih i razvojnih projekata. Koautor je više od 40 tehničkih rešenja.

Oblast istraživanja Ivan Popovića obuhvata razvoj namenskih sistema, sisteme za rad u realnom vremenu, projektovanje sistema sa smanjenom potrošnjom, integrisane višeprocesorske sisteme i mrežne distribuirane sisteme, senzorske sisteme, rešavanje problema vezanih za koncepte pametnih gradova, pametnih kuća i smart grid koncept.
